The nerve centre of Uzbek power is to be found here, amid the Senate, the Supreme Assembly and the esplanades reserved for grand parades. Walkers take to the vast park to enjoy a little fresh air in summer, while the eternal flame recalls the sacrifices made by Uzbek soldiers during the Second World War (referred to here as the Great Patriotic War). The names of the soldiers who died in combat are inscribed on gilded steel panels to be consulted beneath traditional iwans (monumental porches).
