If Atlanta saw the birth of the civil rights movement in the US, nowhere is this heritage as evident as on Auburn Avenue, at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. A commercial and social focal point of the black community from 1890, in the 1960s this avenue became the assembly point of those leading the civil rights movement. The sector still bears the scars of great poverty, despite the superbly restored buildings.
