Following a fire, the palace was rebuilt in the neo-Classical style between 1789 and 1803. The four-winged building was completed in 1914 with the construction of the south wing, which houses some of the finest examples of early and late German Classicist interiors. It also contains various works of Weimar art, including a large Cranach collection.
