The Abbess's dining room in the Convento di San Paolo was decorated in monumental style by Correggio in 1519-20; note the frescoes in the vault, a luminous mythological creation in which the influence of Mantegna is evident. The delicate and sensual character of these paintings comes as a surprise in this religious setting, as does the portrayal of Abbess Giovanna Piacenza as the goddess Diana the Huntress (above the fireplace).
