The city's financial centre, this lively district is also worth a visit for its historical interest. It was on the southern tip of Manhattan Island that the first European settlers, the Dutch, settled and founded a large farming town. Its original layout has been partially preserved, which explains why we don't find here the rectilinear geometry typical of the city, but rather concentric axes that follow the profile of the shoreline.
