Departing from Mare-Longue, the trail snakes through a beautiful primary forest. The trees, some several hundred years old, have insinuated themselves into one volcanic lava flow after another. Ferns and air plants have created a particularly rich and lush undergrowth. A second trail crosses the more recent plantations, where the less dense environment means you can get a closer look at the plant species.
