This impressive fajã, occupied by a lagoon, has been declared a nature reserve to preserve - among other things - the clams, shellfish that are now found only here. Once populated by 200 inhabitants, it is now mainly popular with surfers and travellers seeking seclusion. A visit to the centro de Interpretação da fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo, housed in superbly renovated houses, provides information on the particular features and fragility of the fajãs.
