Djerdap Gorge, on the Danube, is now a protected national park that extends over 100km, starting at the town of Golubac. On the shores of Lake Djerdap, Donji Milanovac is a pleasant stopover town. Along the Romanian border, the gorge is called the Iron Gates, separating the Romanian Carpathians from the Serbian Balkans. Visible only from the river, Emperor Trajan's Table is a reminder of the Roman presence on the banks of the river.
