Nestled amidst a row of brownstones, Tabard Inn’s library-like entrance—complete with handsome wooden floors and historic decorations—befits a restaurant that first opened in 1922. But, you can also bet your grandmother’s china that this kitchen didn’t serve shish kebabs or paella back then. They do now, of course, and this gem that is tucked inside DC’s oldest continuously operated hotel doesn’t adhere to any rules.
It’s a place where American food like fried Virginia oysters, seared duck breast and filet mignon mingle with Middle Eastern-minded items. Envision the likes of grilled lamb sausage on a bed of lentils; or Palestinian “pasta” stuffed with ground beef and set in a yogurt- and pomegranate seed-sauce—a specialty of the chef's mother.
